Korea's Autumn Foliage, in the Order It Actually Happens
The color starts in the northeast mountains and rolls south for weeks. Here's where it peaks first, and where to catch it last.

The Color Moves South Before It's Done
Korea's foliage isn't one date on a calendar β it's a wave. It starts high and northeast, then rolls south and downhill over about six weeks. So "when should I go" really depends on "where are you going." These three are listed in the order they typically turn.
1Seoraksan β First to Turn
- Korea's showcase mountain for fall color, up in the northeast β elevation and latitude mean it's usually the first major spot to catch color, starting near the ridgelines and working down the slopes through October
- The cable car up toward Gwongeumseong Fortress is the easy way to get a high vantage point without committing to a full hike
Exact peak dates shift year to year with the weather β worth checking a current-year foliage forecast a week or two out rather than booking around a fixed date. Mountain weather changes fast, so also check the national park's official trail and cable-car status before you set out.
2Seoul β The Accessible Window
- You don't need a mountain trip to see real color β Namsan's ginkgo trees turn gold, the old palace grounds mix maple and ginkgo along their stone walls (Deoksugung's stone wall path gets called out often), and Bukhansan gives you actual hiking-grade foliage without leaving city limits
- Runs a couple of weeks behind Seoraksan, typically stretching from late October into mid-November
This is the realistic option if a dedicated mountain trip isn't in the plan β the timing overlap with Seoraksan's tail end means one trip can sometimes catch both.
3Naejangsan β The Last Word
- Further south, and often cited as Korea's single most famous foliage destination β the approach to the temple runs through a dense maple corridor that's the reason for its reputation
- Being further south means it's typically last among the well-known spots to peak, usually early-to-mid November
It's popular precisely because it's well known β weekend crowds get heavy at peak, so a weekday visit is worth the extra effort if the schedule allows it.
